Richard Nathaniel Wright (September 4, 1908 – November 28, 1960) was an African-American novelist and short story writer, who is arguably the most prominent and influential African-American novelist of the first half of the twentieth century.
Wright's works, most notably the story collection Uncle Tom's Children and the novel Native Son, depict movingly the trials and tribulations lower-class black Americans and their struggle for upward mobility in a segregated country.
Wright's early works, most notably the autobiographical work Black Boy, are also notable for their political undertones; in addition to being an acclaimed writer Wright was also a political activist.
