Asha was born on 8 September 1933 (age 90 years; as of 2023) in Sangli, Maharashtra, British India.

She was trained in classical music along with her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, by their father Deenanath Mangeshkar. She was very close to her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, in childhood. Lata took her along wherever she would go; she even carried Asha to her school.
